Orchestra barocca del Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello di Venezia
La Fenice Opera House new production
with Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello di Venezia
This year Teatro La Fenice has chosen a relatively unknown score by Tomaso
Albinoni for its Opera Giovani project. The musician gained renown for a famous
Adagio that he had not even composed himself (the mysteries of the theatre world)
whilst his interesting opera works such as this Zenobia, regina de’ Palmireni have
been ignored; owing to its setting alone, which has now become relatively well-
known because of the tragic vicissitudes that made it fall victim to the blindest kind
of fanaticism, this opera offers a direct bridge with the world today. With a libretto
by Antonio Marchi, the composition was presented in 1694 at Teatro SS. Giovanni
e Paolo in Venice; the plot deals with the story of Zenobia, queen of Palmyra whom
the Roman Emperor Aureliano fell in love with.
