La Locandiera or The Mistress of the Inn, is probably one Goldoni’s most famous plays and it has been put to music more than once: by both Antonio Salieri and by Giovanni Simone Mayr. Changing the title to Mirandolina, the Czech Bohuslav Martinû composed a witty version to his own libretto in Italian.
Mirandolina is a delightful hybrid of opéra-comique, Singspiel and operetta; the author died just a few months after its debut at the National Opera in Prague in 1959.
With its light tunes, sparkling dialogues and a hint of melancholy, it is during the last decade that it has finally received the attention it deserves.
