450th anniversary of Claudio Monteverdi’s birth

Composed for Venice and staged in 1641 with a libretto by Busenello that takes history as a pretext to tell an intimate drama, L’incoronazione di Poppea (The Coronation of Poppea) stands out with its heroic charge combined with an unexpected streak of irony. The love between Poppea and young Nerone oversteps any kind of political intrigue or jealousy and overturns convention. With its intensity and perfect composition, the final duet, “Pur ti miro” is unrivalled and has been a source of inspiration for centuries, together with other compositions by Monteverdi
