The programme juxtaposes Taktakishvili and Khachaturian, both associated with Soviet realism, with Prokofiev, Shostakovich and Weinberg. Their works reflect, in different ways, the relationship between music and the Soviet regime, between communicative requirements, folkloric references and personal artistic exploration.
Particular attention is paid to Weinberg, a friend and confidant of Shostakovich, whose music has only recently been rediscovered. His musical language intimately captures the performer’s attention, who recognises in it the seed of authentic lived experience translated into music; and it will be the performer, in turn, who will reveal his or her own authentic and passionate soul to the audience!
