Presented for the first time in January 2005 at the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp with Robert Carsen’s ingenious and glittering production, Riccardo III is a caustic score, with a libretto by Ian Burton based on Shakespeare’s tragedy. The sovereign’s murderous madness dominates the narration in which, following what is a tragically topical path, crimes come in rapid succession without respite, creating a work of uncontrollable violence. A portrait of the last king in the Plantagenet line that, without dwelling on historical facts, wants to create a link with our world today.
