No sooner had Umberto Giordano seen Fedora by Sardou in 1889 at the Teatro Bellini in Naples with Sarah Bernhardt than he asked the playwright to set it to music, but in vain. He was to have more luck two years later, following the success of Andrea Chénier. Thus, was born his Fedora: a tale of love and death, for which the composer from Foggia managed to create an atmospheric musical climate.
