Engelbert Humperdinck was part of Wagner’s inner circle of disciples (the so-called ‘Knights of the Grail’). Devoted to the Master of Leipzig – whom he idolised, despite his teachers, who were diehard anti-Wagnerians – he did not hesitate to offer him his full collaboration during the composition of Parsifal and the preparation of the opera’s premiere in Bayreuth. Wagner’s influence is evident in Hänsel und Gretel, which is returning to Venice after more than thirty years.
