Jenůfa had not appeared on La Fenice playbill for eighty-five years. The work originates from a realistic theatre pièce – Jej pastorkyňa (“Her stepdaughter”) – by Gabriela Preissová, from which Janáček himself drew inspiration for the libretto. Set in rural Moravia, the sordid story revolves around themes such as honour, jealousy and infanticide.
