Partenope by Georg Friedrich Handel, debuts at La Fenice. The genesis of the work was quite troubled. When the author initially proposed the libretto to the Royal Academy of Music in 1726, the company’s director brusquely rejected it, dismissing Silvio Stampiglia’s text as a reflection of the depraved taste of the Italian public. A few years later, Handel set that libretto to music, animated by a new creative impulse. Handel completed the score of Partenope just two weeks before its premiere at the King’s Theatre on February 24, 1730.
