The famous choreography of Giselle, created in 1993 by the Russian artist Elena Tchernichova for the Wiener Staatsballett, is one of the historical cornerstones of the prestigious Viennese dance company. Proposed by the most important international opera houses, this version of the ballet is staged at La Fenice with the orchestral direction of Paul Connelly. Elena Tchernichova structured the direction and choreography based on the historical nineteenth-century versions of the fathers of romantic ballet – Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot, authors of the world premiere in Paris in 1841 – filtered through the subsequent, fundamental revisions and additions by Marius Petipa for the Russian Imperial Theatres. The staging signed by the pair ‘Elena Tchernichova-Wiener Staatsballett’ stands out for its particular chromatic choice: the scenery and the backdrops play on shades of shades of grey, white and black, on which the dancers’ costumes stand out vividly, focusing the audience’s attention on the expressiveness and purity of the choreographic movements. The Wiener Staatsballett presents this restaging in Venice under the guidance of the dance star, Alessandra Ferri, who with this production marked her debut as artistic director of the Company. According to tradition, the original music – a romantic masterpiece by Adolphe Adam – is joined in the first act by an insertion by Friedrich Burgmüller, known as the Peasant Pas de deux, aimed at giving space to co-starring dancers.
