Il matrimonio segreto

Domenico Cimarosa
La Fenice Opera House

The Opera lasts about 3 hours and 5 minutes, including one interval

Cimarosa’s only work still to be regularly performed, it is arguably one of the best 18th-century comic operas. Il matrimonio segreto, music by Domenico Cimarosa on a libretto by Giovanni Bertati, is a two-acter based on the 1766 play The Clandestine Marriage by George Colman and David Garrick. The plot centers around the wealthy Bolognese merchant Geronimo, a social climber whose household includes daughters Elisetta and Carolina, sister Fidalma, and secretary Paolino, who has secretly married Carolina. Before true love triumphs in the end, many misundertandings and unexpected turns occur. It was first performed on 7 February 1792 at the Hofburg Theatre in Vienna in the presence of Emperor Leopold II, but no evidence supports the urban legend of a full encore in the same night.
