The Istrian composer Antonio Smareglia, born in Pula in 1854, occupies a unique position in many ways: a descendant of an Italian family, but a subject of the Imperial Royal Government of Vienna, he stands equidistant between Italian tradition and Central European influences. His choice of subjects and settings brings him closer to verismo, but his refined orchestration, which gives the instruments a predominant role, reflects Austro-German musical traditions.
