Gaetano Donizetti’s immortal opera Lucia di Lammermoor is one of the most popular titles with the audience of all times, and it has marked a crucial passage, a sort of ‘initiation’ for legendary singers such as Maria Callas, Renata Scotto and Joan Sutherland. After its triumphant première in Naples in 1835, the luckless love story between Lucia and Edgardo has never left the opera houses all over the world. Donizetti also wrote a French version that was to enchant the Théâtre de la Renaissance four years later, and was to be performed in the music temple on the other side of the Alps, in the Paris Opéra in 1846.
